Abstract:
A folklore conjecture predicts that if the (topological) fundamental groups of algebraic varieties are «big» enough, then such varieties should be hyperbolic. In this talk I will confirm this prediction when the fundamental groups admit a big and semisimple linear quotient. The whole proof lies in the interface among non-abelian Hodge, Nevanlinna theories and algebraic geometry. I will outline the main ideas of the proof.
